River Glen Erosion Control - Willow Spiling
Client:  Balfour Beatty Electricty Alliance
Services Provided:  Low impact, traditional erosion control technique
EcoNorth's habitats team installed 100m of willow spiling along the sensitive River Glen in north Northumberland in order to stabilise an eroding river bank which threatened an important access track leading to National Grid's electricity distribution network. Live willow steaks were driven deep in to the river bank and live willow whips were then woven between the steaks.  The willow will shoot and root, stabilising the bankside, reducing sediments to the river and protecting the infrastructure.  Over time the willow will grow providing habitat for local wildlife providing a long term sustainable solution to the erosion and promoting biodiversity.

Middlemoor Wind Farm - Post Consent Ecology Support
Client:  RWE Npower Renewables
Services Provided:  Surveys, Construction Method Statements, Liaison with Local Authority
Following the granting of consent for an 18 turbine wind farm in Northumberland RWE Npower Renewables commissioned EcoNorth to compile, and agree with the local planning authority, "a scheme to protect wildlife and fauna during construction".  A number of checking surveys were carried out for key species such as goshawk and white clawed crayfish and our proactive approach resulted in the agreement of a number of appropriately protective construction method statements with the County Ecologist.  Construction is due to start in spring 2011.

Tranwell Nature Reserve: Protected Species Surveys
Client: Northumberland County Council
Services Provided:  Protected Species Surveys and Construction Method Statement
Northumberland County Council plan to develop a new nature reserve at Tranwell Ponds, near Morpeth and the proposals include constructing a network of paths and boardwalks to facilitate disabled access.  As part of their planning permission for the works pre-construction surveys for a range of protected species was required.  EcoNorth identified a suitable survey programme targeting great crested newts, white clawed crayfish, otter, badger and water vole as key species.  The resulting surveys were successfully completed with identification of a large population of great crested newts as well as recording water shrew on the site.  A number of recommendations were made for the construction works in order to protect great crested newts and ensure no legislation is breached.
