What is a preliminary ecological appraisal?
The Preliminary Ecological Appraisal / Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey is the primary tool for assessing a sites ecological quality. It terms of ecology it is often the first requirement for planning, so if you have been asked for an ecology survey this is what you require.
The survey involves assessing the features on your site and it’s surrounds, looking at habitat types present as well as protected species. The results are analysed and presented to the client in report format and includes any recommendations for further work to ensure that your site is both legally compliant and able to meet any ecological planning conditions stipulated.
The terminology can be varied when referring to this type of survey and there are slight differences between them. If what you have been asked for includes:
- Baseline survey
- Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey
- Constraints Survey
- Ecological Site Assessment
- Ecological Site Appraisal
- Ecological Scoping Survey
- Walkover Survey
We can accommodate what you have been asked for, so just get in touch to discuss what is involved in more detail.
When do I need to get in touch?
As soon as possible and before any works begin on site. The optimal time is spring and summer however in reality they can be undertaken at any time of the year and we recommend that such surveys are undertaken at the beginning of the year. This enables you to identify any further surveys for protected species that have restricted survey periods generally during the spring and summer months. This allows you to plan your development schedule accordingly and prevent expensive delays further down the line.
