EcoNorth’s 2024 Bake Off Event for Anti-Slavery Day

Bake Off Event 2024

EcoNorth held our third annual Bake Off event to mark Anti-Slavery Day. This key event is celebrated on Friday 18 October each year to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern slavery around the globe; encourage action from governments, local authorities, companies, charities and individuals to prevent their occurrence; bring criminals to justice; and provide survivors with support.

Our Bake Off theme for 2024 was “Sweet or Slavery?” to promote the ethical purchasing of baking ingredients and beyond. Much of the transatlantic slave trade revolved around the development and maintenance of sugar and cacao plantations and the exploitation of millions of people to work on them; sadly, many of our favourite food products that we buy these days are produced or delivered by vulnerable people trapped in modern slavery through forced labour.

The team’s baked goods were shared and enjoyed during our monthly team meeting. Based on the team’s collective judging, EcoNorth’s 2024 Star Baker award was presented to Niamh Quirk for her yummy carrot cupcakes which was deemed to be the most delicious entry, despite some stiff competition.
